The 24th World Philosophy Congress was held in Beijing between 13 to 20 August. If Westerners believe ‘Chinese Philosophy’ is yet another tactic of Soft-power, why should a perceived threat to Western powers be taken as such by the African continent and what does that mean to ‘philosophical thought’? Many of the congress sessions were devoted to a variety of Asian and African philosophies. This openness to differing ideas contributed to an exit from the Eurocentric focus that has characterises philosophy to today. This opens the possibility of taking much more seriously the contribution to global civilisation of intellectual, spiritual and philosophical traditions of other regions, including that of China and Africa and this change of focus should be encouraged.
